Nestled between commercially developed Routes 55 and 56, Hazlet Township was originally part of Middletown and was known as Raritan Township until 1967.

Builders, starting in the 1960s, began "growing" housing subdivisions on former farmland-today's well-kept neighborhoods. Shopping strip malls and "big box" retailers such as Sports Authority, Home Depot, Staples, Lowe's, Costco, and a 14-screen Multiplex theater line Route 55. Airport Plaza, at Route 56 and Middle Road, took its name from the former Walling Field, a private airstrip.

Hazlet residents take the commercialism in stride, safe in the side streets that make up their quiet neighborhoods.

Hazlet's population of 21,400 has remained steady, with nearly 88% of homes owner-occupied. Median household income rose to $78,000 in 2000, from $50,600 a decade before in the 5.6-square-mile township. Hazlet's four elementary schools' enrollment of 1,565 students hasn't changed in a decade, but Raritan High School has gained 108 students, to 968 in 2000.
