One of the seven original towns in New Jersey and Monmouth County's first settlement in 1664, Middletown has a rich and storied history.

Despite several townships cleaving from the original "Monmouth Patent" that established Middletown, at 41 square miles it's still the largest township in the county.

Each of its eleven distinct neighborhoods-River Plaza, Lincroft, Oak Hill, Fairview, Chapel Hill, New Monmouth, Port Monmouth, Belford, Leonardo, Navesink and Locust, has its own zip code and personality, providing a diverse range of living experiences.

The Oceanic Bridge that crosses the Navesink River from Rumson provides one of the most scenic views in the county and leads to the Locust section, a state historic district. Fairview and River Plaza also share views of the picturesque Navesink River. Chapel Hill and Navesink follow the old King's Highway, which was originally part of the Lenape Indians' Burlington Path, their original trail to the coast. Oak Hill, between Route 55 and the Garden State Parkway, boasts newer, more upscale developments. Neighborhoods along Raritan Bay retain their hands-on working ethic. Belford, home to the venerable Belford Seafood Cooperative where generations of fishermen have gone to sea to harvest the catch, is certain to change once a new county-owned transportation center and ferry terminal opens. Port Monmouth and Leonardo have many tight little neighborhoods where generations of families have talked over the backyard fence. Sandwiched between Routes 55 and 36 is New Monmouth, an apple-pie slice of middle-class America, while along Navesink River Road are mega-mansions of the rich and famous.

The school district is divided into Middletown North and Middletown South. Enrollment at the seven elementary schools that serve Middletown North High School increased 21%, from 2,545 in 1996 to 2,980 in 2001. The population of the high school, in the New Monmouth neighborhood, declined by a dozen students in 2001, to 1,615. Enrollment of the five elementary schools that serve Middletown South High School, in the River Plaza section, increased 16%, from 1,819 to 1,936 students. However, that high school's population decreased by 150 students.

Median household income in Middletown is $83,430.
