There's hardly a vacant storefront along First Avenue, the main street leading to the town's busy marina. First Avenue is home to some first-class restaurants, unique shops and the First Avenue Playhouse dessert theater.

Another rarity, an old fashioned three-screen movie theater, shows first-run and classic films. Stately Victorian houses rub shoulders with contemporary mansions overlooking the marina, which is home to ocean-going yachts, fishing party boats and a high-speed ferry terminal.

The Henry Hudson Trail passes through the marina district on its way to Highlands, the next town east. Atlantic Highlands' population grew to 4,710 in 2001, with 65% of the homes owner-occupied. Median household income? About $70,400 in 2000, up from $44,700 in 1990. Atlantic Highlands' only elementary school has about 500 students.
