Keansburg, named for the grandfather of former New
Jersey Governor Thomas Kean (whose name is pronounced "Kane"), is a
bustling burg with intense local pride. Keansburg's big deal was-and
still is-the Keansburg Amusement Park. The oldest boardwalk amusement
area in New Jersey has been attracting families from New Jersey and New
York City since 1900.
Keansburg languished—as so many other Bayshore towns did-until the
1980s, when the all-but-deserted Keansburg Amusement Park and
Runaway Rapids Waterpark was re-purchased by the original owners.
It's possible to find excellent real estate values in Keansburg.
Population dropped from 11,000 to 10,700 in the most recent census.
Median income is $48,500 today, up from $31,800 in 1990. Enrollment in
Keansburg5 s three elementary schools stood at 1,556 in 2001, a gain of
156 students from 1996. About 450 students attend Keansburg High.
