Business is booming in the Highlands, which has one of the area's two business improvement districts.

In addition to attracting new businesses to the borough, the Highlands Business Partnership has developed a full calendar of events for the tiny borough. Besides its famous Clam Festival, one can find craft shows, weekly summer farmer's market. Cruise Nights for car fans, free summer concerts, an Oktoberfest and the annual Twin Lights Bike New York Tour.

At 260 feet above sea level, Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook on Scenic Drive is the highest point along the Eastern Seaboard, providing an excellent vantage for Sandy Hook and New York City in the distance. A marble sculpture, "In Memorial" to be placed at Veterans Park, commemorates the dozens of people from the Bayshore region lost in the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center.

Another great vantage is the Twin Lights Historic Site. Its museum displays New Jersey's pioneering work in life saving.

Highlands remains homeport to numerous "working" fishing boats, "party" boats that take groups out for a day in the sun and tall tales, and also a high-speed commuter ferry to New York.

The Highlands-Sea Bright Bridge is the gateway to Sandy Hook and beach towns south along Route 36.

Because the real estate build-out is almost complete in Highlands, the population has remained steady at just over 5,000 residents. Only 48% of the homes are owner-occupied, with 59% rentals, including summer rentals. Median household income in 2000 was $49,650, up from $52,650 in 1990.

The one elementary school's enrollment was near 500, up from 220 in 1990. Grades 9-12 from both Highlands and Atlantic Highlands go to Henry Hudson Regional High.
